What Is Not Allowed in Kashi Vishwanath Temple? Complete Rules for Sawan 2026

Phones, leather belts, cameras, and pens are all stopped at the gate — and during Sawan the rules tighten further, with Sparsh Darshan suspended on Mondays. The complete list of prohibited items, the dress code that actually gets enforced, and what changes during Shravan.

Most people find out what they cannot carry into Kashi Vishwanath while standing at a security gate, holding it. The queue is long, the lanes behind you are full, and the item in your hand is your phone.

This is the complete list of what is not allowed inside the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, what the dress code actually requires, and what changes during Sawan — when the crowds are at their heaviest and the rules tighten accordingly.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Varanasi

What is not allowed in Kashi Vishwanath Temple

The temple sits inside a high-security zone. Screening is thorough, frisking is routine, and there is very little discretion at the checkpoint. The following are prohibited inside the temple premises:

Photography and videography are prohibited throughout the temple premises and the surrounding corridor red zone. This is enforced seriously. Photographs are fine outside the complex.

Where to leave your things

Lockers are available near the entry gates. Some are free facilities run by the temple administration, others are private shops nearby charging a small amount. Deposit your phone, wallet, belt and footwear together in one place rather than scattering them, and note your gate number — the corridor has several entrances and coming out of a different one is easy to do and slow to fix.

The practical advice is simpler than the list: carry almost nothing. Cash in a pocket, a cloth bag if you must, and your offerings.

Dress code at Kashi Vishwanath Temple

Dress code for darshan at Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Varanasi

This is where the answer splits in two, and where most confusion comes from.

For general darshan

There is no strictly enforced legal dress code for ordinary darshan. What is expected is modest clothing that covers the arms and legs. Western clothes are permitted. Traditional Indian wear is not compulsory.

Are jeans allowed in Kashi Vishwanath Temple? Plain jeans generally pass without issue. Heavily ripped jeans, shorts, short skirts and sleeveless tops may be stopped during peak security checks, and during Sawan the checking is stricter than usual. If you have a choice, choose the safer option.

Is a saree compulsory? No. Modest clothing of any kind is acceptable for general darshan.

For Sparsh Darshan and special puja

Here the dress code is compulsory and enforced by the temple administration. Men must wear an unstitched dhoti with a kurta or upper cloth. Women must wear a saree.

Devotees not dressed accordingly are not turned away from the temple — they simply take darshan from outside the sanctum instead of entering it. If you have travelled specifically to touch the Shivling, arriving in trousers means you will not.

What changes during Sawan

Sawan, the month of Shravan, is the most intense period in the temple's year. Every Monday brings crowds that run into the lakhs, and the administration issues revised arrangements each season.

Jhanki Darshan replaces Sparsh Darshan on peak days

This is the most important thing to understand before you travel. On Sawan Mondays and other peak days, the temple operates on a Jhanki Darshan model — you view the Shivling from a short distance and pass your offerings to a priest, rather than entering the sanctum.

Sparsh Darshan is restricted to specific non-peak time slots during Sawan, and on Mondays it is commonly suspended entirely, with daily passes cancelled. This has applied to VIP and protocol categories as well in previous seasons.

If touching the Shivling is essential to your visit, plan for a Tuesday through Saturday and avoid the Monday peaks. If you are coming for the atmosphere of Sawan itself, come on a Monday and accept jhanki darshan.

Traffic restrictions

The stretch from Godowlia to Maidagin is typically declared a no-vehicle zone through Sawan. No car reaches the temple gates at the best of times, but during Sawan the drop-off point moves considerably further out and the walk lengthens accordingly. Add an hour to any plan involving the temple.

Queue times

Waits of three to six hours on Sawan Mondays are ordinary rather than exceptional. Barefoot, in August humidity, without a phone. Come early, eat before, and carry water to the point where security takes it.

Sawan began on 30 July this year, which places the remaining Somwars in the second half of August. Verify against the current panchang before fixing your dates.

Questions people ask at the gate

Can I touch the Shivling?

Through Sparsh Darshan, yes, in designated time slots, subject to the dress code above. During Sawan Mondays and other high-footfall periods it is restricted or suspended. Restrictions exist to protect the Shivling from continuous physical contact and to keep the ritual schedule running, not to exclude anyone.

Can women visit during menstruation?

Yes. There is no restriction at Kashi Vishwanath on this basis.

Can foreign nationals enter?

Yes. Entry for foreign visitors is directed through a designated gate, and you should carry your passport. Confirm the current gate on arrival, as entry arrangements are periodically revised.

Is there an entry fee?

General darshan is free. Aartis and special darshan categories are ticketed, and can be booked through the official temple portal.

Can I carry prasad and offerings in?

Bilva patra, flowers, milk and Gangajal for abhishek are the traditional offerings and are permitted. Outside packaged prasad is often restricted. Vendors near the gates sell approved offering sets, which is the simpler route.

What about the people offering to take me straight in?

Unofficial guides work the approach lanes heavily during Sawan, promising shortened queues. Most cannot deliver it. Decline politely and keep walking. Legitimate expedited darshan is booked in advance through the temple, not negotiated in a lane.

A short checklist before you leave your hotel

How we arrange darshan

We arrange temple visits with a Sāthi who knows the current gate arrangements, handles the locker and offering logistics, and waits with your belongings while you are inside. Our guides work across fifteen languages, which matters more in a Sawan queue than at any other time of year.

Everything is quoted at a fixed, printed price before you confirm, under our Fair Price Pledge. There is no negotiation at the gate and no revised figure afterwards. You can see what a temple visit includes on our darshan package page, or look at the wider set of temples across the city that most itineraries miss.

Getting to the temple during Sawan is its own problem, given the vehicle restrictions. Our guide to arranging a car in Varanasi covers drop-off points and what to expect. For choosing when to come at all, see our month-by-month guide.

Rules at Kashi Vishwanath are revised periodically, and Sawan arrangements are issued fresh each season. Treat everything here as a reliable baseline rather than a guarantee, and confirm the specifics on the day.
