Our Story
Kashi & Kin started with a simple, slightly uncomfortable observation: Varanasi has more soul per square foot than almost anywhere on earth, and almost none of the systems that make a trip actually feel taken care of.
Kashi & Kin is founded and run by our founder, who did his MBA in Paris, France — spending those years immersed in a part of the world where luxury and hospitality aren't an afterthought, but a discipline. Living and studying there meant seeing, up close, what it actually takes to make a guest feel looked after: the small operational details, the consistency, the sheer intentionality behind experiences that feel effortless from the outside.
Coming back home, the contrast was hard to ignore. Varanasi is one of the most extraordinary cities on earth — and yet the systems around how visitors are received here haven't caught up to what the city deserves. That gap became the whole reason Kashi & Kin exists: a conviction that Varanasi doesn't need to become less itself to be world-class. It just needs someone who's seen world-class hospitality up close to actually build it here.
We're set up to welcome both domestic and international travelers properly — not as two different tiers of service, but as one standard, applied consistently. Whether you're visiting from three states away or three continents away, the same Sāthi, the same fair pricing, and the same attention to detail apply. That's the standard we're here to raise.
Before Kashi & Kin existed, a few of us spent years around Varanasi's ghats, temples, and lanes — sometimes as hosts to visiting friends and family, sometimes just watching how travellers were treated once they stepped off the train.
The pattern was always the same. A tout pulls someone aside within minutes of arrival, promising the "best" boat or the "real" Aarti spot. Prices exist in three versions — one for locals, one for domestic tourists, one for foreigners — decided on the spot, with no receipt and no way to know if it was fair. A guide is warm and attentive right up until the booking is paid for, then disappears the moment something needs fixing. A boat shows up forty minutes late for a sunrise Aarti that cannot be rescheduled. And when something does go wrong, there's rarely one person who actually feels responsible for making it right.
None of this is anyone's fault exactly — it's what happens in a city that receives millions of visitors a year without a layer of people whose job is to hold the whole experience together. But it meant a city this extraordinary was, too often, remembered for the wrong reasons.
A few of us had also travelled outside India — a small-group food tour in Kyoto, a private driver along the Amalfi coast, a boutique host in the English countryside — and it was hard not to notice the difference. Not in luxury, necessarily. In certainty.
Prices were shown upfront and didn't move. One person was your point of contact for the entire trip, not a relay of strangers. Punctuality wasn't a bonus — it was assumed. And if anything went wrong, someone picked up the phone and owned it.
None of that required enormous budgets. It required someone deciding, deliberately, to build those systems and hold themselves to them. That was the gap we couldn't stop thinking about: Varanasi didn't need to feel less like Varanasi to be looked after properly. It just needed someone to actually do the looking after.
Kashi & Kin is our attempt at that bridge — bringing the reliability we saw abroad to a city we already loved, without sanding off what makes it what it is.
Every guest gets a Sāthi — one real person, reachable on call or WhatsApp, who stays with your trip from the first message to the last goodbye, not a different guide for every stop. Every price is shown before you agree to anything and stays exactly what we quoted — that's our Fair Price Pledge, not a slogan we put on a page and forgot about. And we run this out of a small office in Varanasi where we answer our own phone, on purpose, because we'd rather stay small and accountable than big and anonymous.
