Sarnath, Ramnagar & Chunar — a short drive, a different Varanasi.

Not everything worth seeing is on the ghats. Sarnath is where the Buddha delivered his first sermon, Ramnagar Fort sits across the river from the city you already know, and Chunar Fort's cliffs over the Ganges see a fraction of the crowds. All three are private car-and-Sāthi day trips, priced individually or together.

Sarnath~30 min
Ramnagar Fort~30-45 min
Chunar Fort~1 hr

Where each one takes you

Three very different day trips from the same city

Each is reachable in under an hour, but they don't overlap in what they offer:

  • Sarnath — where the Buddha taught his first sermon after enlightenment. A stupa, a museum with Ashoka's original lion capital, and the quiet of a site far older than the temples in the old city.
  • Ramnagar Fort — the former residence of the Kashi Naresh (King of Varanasi), directly across the Ganges. A museum of vintage cars, weapons, and royal artefacts inside a fort that's still lived in by the royal family.
  • Chunar Fort — a hilltop fort overlooking a bend in the Ganges, with a history running through Sher Shah Suri, the Mughals, and the British. The least visited of the three, and often the most peaceful.

How it works

Pick one, two, or all three

Each destination is ₹999, including the private car and your Sāthi for that leg of the trip. Choose all three in the panel to the right and we take 10% off the combined total automatically — no separate discount code needed.

Planning tip: Chunar is in the opposite direction from Sarnath and Ramnagar, so fitting all three into one day is tight. Most guests either pick one or two per day, or spread all three across a longer trip — your Sāthi can help plan the route.

Common questions

How far is Sarnath from Varanasi?

About 10-13 km, roughly 30-40 minutes by car depending on traffic. It's easily done as a half-day trip from Varanasi.

How far is Ramnagar Fort from Varanasi?

Ramnagar Fort sits directly across the Ganges from the main ghats, about 30-45 minutes by road, or a shorter boat crossing depending on the season and river level.

Is Chunar Fort worth visiting from Varanasi?

Chunar Fort is about 40 km from Varanasi (roughly an hour's drive), perched above the Ganges with views most day-trippers don't expect. It's less crowded than Sarnath or Ramnagar and worth it if you have a spare half-day.

Can I visit all three in one day?

It's possible but rushed, since Chunar is in the opposite direction from Sarnath. Most guests either pick one or two per day, or spread all three across a longer trip.

Do I need a guide for Sarnath?

Not strictly, but Sarnath's museum and stupa complex make a lot more sense with someone explaining the history. A Sāthi also handles the car, entry, and any local fees.

See more than the ghats
