Varanasi Distances: Assi Ghat to Ramnagar Fort, Sarnath, Airport

Assi Ghat to Ramnagar Fort is 8 km by road, not the 3 km the map shows. Real distances and honest drive times across Varanasi, including Sarnath, the airport and Cantt station.

Distances in Varanasi are short. Journey times are not. A place three kilometres away can take forty minutes to reach, and travellers who plan their day on distance alone tend to run out of afternoon somewhere around the second stop.

Ramnagar Fort is where this catches people out most often. The distance from Assi Ghat to Ramnagar Fort is around 8 km by road, from Kashi Vishwanath Temple to Ramnagar Fort around 15 km, and from Ramnagar Fort to Sarnath around 20 km. Every one of those figures is larger than the map suggests, and the reason is the river.

Below are the distances people actually ask about, with honest drive times attached. Where the number on a map disagrees with the number in practice, we have said so and explained why.

Why Varanasi distances mislead

Three things stretch a short journey here.

The river. Ramnagar Fort sits directly opposite the ghats. In a straight line it is barely three kilometres from Assi Ghat. By road it is closer to nine, because you must drive south to the bridge, cross, and come back up the far bank. Distance calculators that measure across water are technically correct and practically useless.

The old city. Cars do not enter the lanes around Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Dashashwamedh Ghat or Manikarnika Ghat. A vehicle will drop you at Godowlia crossing or the Assi Ghat end, and the last stretch is on foot or by cycle rickshaw. Add ten to twenty minutes to any journey ending at a ghat.

The traffic. Godowlia, Lanka and the Cantt station approach are congested for most of the day. The same nine-kilometre drive that takes twenty-five minutes at six in the morning can take an hour at six in the evening.

Assi Ghat to Ramnagar Fort distance

Around 8 to 9 km by road. Allow 25 to 35 minutes each way.

The straight-line distance is under 3 km, which is why so many websites list this journey as much shorter than it is. The road route runs from Assi through Lanka and BHU, across the Ramnagar bridge, and into Ramnagar town.

There is a second option. Boats cross from Assi Ghat directly to the Ramnagar side, and the crossing takes 20 to 30 minutes on the water. It is a pleasant approach and the fort looks far better from the river than from the road. It is also weather dependent and the return timing needs planning, so it suits travellers with an unhurried afternoon rather than those on a schedule.

Ramnagar Fort, Varanasi, across the Ganga from Assi Ghat

Ramnagar Fort sits opposite the ghats. Three kilometres across the water, nine by road.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple to Ramnagar Fort distance

Around 14 to 16 km by road. Allow 45 to 60 minutes each way.

This is the journey most people underestimate. The temple sits deep in the old city, so the drive begins with a walk out to Godowlia where your vehicle can wait. From there the route runs south through Sonarpura and Lanka to the bridge, then back north to Ramnagar.

If you are combining darshan with Ramnagar Fort in one day, do the temple first thing in the morning and the fort in the afternoon. Reversing the order means hitting the old city approach at the worst possible hour.

Ramnagar Fort to Sarnath distance

Around 20 to 22 km by road. Allow 50 to 70 minutes.

These two sit on opposite corners of the city, one south-east across the river and the other north-east on the far side of town. The route crosses back over the bridge and skirts the eastern edge of Varanasi.

Doing both in a single day is comfortable with a car and difficult without one. A reasonable shape for the day is Sarnath in the morning when the site is cool and quiet, lunch, then Ramnagar Fort in the afternoon so you finish with the Ganga at your back in the late light.

Airport to the ghats

Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is at Babatpur, north-west of the city.

For an early flight out, leave the ghats three hours before departure. Two is usually enough. Three means you are not the person watching the clock in traffic near Lahartara.

Railway station to the main sites

Varanasi Junction, still widely called Cantt, is the arrival point for most trains.

Distances between the ghats

The ghats run in an unbroken line along the river, and the honest answer is that you should walk them rather than drive between them.

Assi Ghat to Dashashwamedh Ghat is roughly 3 km along the riverfront, about 45 minutes at a steady pace with time to stop. Dashashwamedh to Manikarnika is another 15 minutes on foot. By road the same journeys take almost as long and show you nothing.

Assi Ghat, Varanasi, the southernmost ghat on the riverfront

Assi Ghat, the southern end of the line. Three kilometres of riverfront from here to Dashashwamedh.

The exception is early morning, when many people take a boat instead. A sunrise boat ride covers the same stretch from the water in about an hour, and it is the only way to see the full sweep of the ghats at once. Our guide to the ghats of Varanasi covers what sits where along that line.

How to plan a day around these numbers

A workable rule for Varanasi: two major sites in a morning, or one major site and one long stretch of walking. Three is ambitious. Four is a day spent in a vehicle.

Getting around

Auto-rickshaws work well for short hops within the city and are easy to find. For anything crossing the river, going to Sarnath, or involving more than two stops, a car with a driver saves more time than it costs, particularly for older travellers and families.

Kashi and Kin arranges cars through drivers we work with directly across the city. Prices are printed before you book, GST included, with no commission stops at silk shops on the way. What you are quoted is what you pay, and nothing is asked for on the ground.

The drivers know which approach to the ghats is open on a given day, which matters more than it sounds during festival weeks when routes near Godowlia close without notice. Full details are on our services page, and our packages cover the common half-day and full-day circuits.

If you would rather have someone explain what you are looking at as well as drive you there, our Sāthi guides work in fifteen languages and can be arranged alongside the car.
